It also boasts various accessibility features and options to customize how you want to play. While its arrival in the PC space has been to the delight of many gamers, the gameplay experience has been marred by poor performance in addition to the numerous bugs, graphical issues, and crashes players are currently experiencing. The story swings just as elegantly between upbeat hijinks and solemn moments of reflection.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 delivers an incredible story about heroes and villains grappling with loneliness. Spider-Man 2 falls between these approaches – it has some of Horizon’s safety, but with a slice of the elevation The Last of Us brought. Spider-Man 2 is the future of polished, competent, elevated sequels, and brings with it so many technical flourishes and a perfect execution of the formula that it stands in a class of its own.

PlayStation detailed the game’s system requirements on PC in a trailer and accompanying blog post. It was created by the American studio Insomniac Games – known for such series as Resistance, Ratchet & Clank and the original Spyro trilogy – since 2020 part of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE).

Spider-Man is one of Sony’s preeminent exclusive titles, so it gets the extra special optimization treatment. The game has a graphics-oriented Fidelity mode and a 60 frames-per-second Performance mode. You get to fully experience how fast Peter and Miles whip through the New York City skyline. Phin attempts to go through with her plan but this fails as the overloaded reactor almost destroys all of Harlem, and Miles’s mother and his uncle work together to evacuate Harlem. Miles uses that as his chance to talk to Phin, and he convinces her not to go through with it. Ultimately, Phin sacrifices herself to help Miles save the city, by flying him high above the city, so he can release the energy where no one else will be harmed from the explosion besides herself.

She isn’t just a reporter for the Bugle, she’s also an integral member of the Spider-team, showing that heroes don’t need superhuman abilities. With a PlayStation Network account connection, players can receive two additional suits, the Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and the Miles Morales 2099 Suit. A PSN account is optional, though, and not required in order to play Spider-Man 2 on PC.

That being said, I can’t help but have hoped for a few more flashes of Gotham City to make their way into New York. A new personal favourite gadget called the Web Grabber – which pulls enemies in from a distance and makes them smack into one another – also playfully builds into this philosophy.

The district of Queens has also been added to the game, expanding the map. Since it’s located on the eastern side of East River, the river itself has also become important, as the player will get to chase down bandits escaping along it by boats. 777X of New York’s districts contain hidden collectibles and side activities.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was first revealed during Sony’s 2021 PlayStation Showcase event. The initial trailer gave us a look at Peter Parker and Miles Morales in action together, with Venom joining the fight at the very end. During PlayStation’s September 2023 State of Play, Insomniac showcased a closer look at Marvel’s New York. Senior Creative Director Bryan Intihar noted that this version of New York is nearly twice the size of the original game, thanks to the addition of the Queens and Brooklyn boroughs.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 welcomes players back to the hustle and bustle of New York City and puts Miles Morales and Peter Parker into the shared spotlight. While the adventure to take down Kraven is mostly linear, offering players a straightforward narrative, there’s still a lot of side content to dive into, like combat challenges, collectibles, quests, and much more. For the first time in the series, you can now switch between both Spider-Men, using their individual skills to explore different parts of the story.

Venom isn’t around long enough either, especially for the impact they act like he had on the city, but it just about made all the waiting worth it. Especially with the added personal connection between Spider-Man and Venom, really highlighting Venom as the dark mirror of Peter. Hopes were high when the teasers at the end of both Spider-Man and Miles Morales teased the arrival of Venom. And, thankfully, it’s the only part of the story they actually did well. Using it to tell a tragic tale of two friends, instead of the more standard Eddie Brock story.
